He has a chest tag that says: M. STEIFF ~ GIENGEN ~TEDDY BAR ~ REPLICA 1906 Tag on the foot says: Ein Tier von Steiff. Fur immer Dein. An animal from Steiff, For ever yours, THIS tag has writing on the backside which is where the faded barcode is . The bear also has a larger attached card , with  (Writing on this "Lakewood Nov. 88 "-a gift endorsement I imagine )  that gives a brief history of this bear's origin which was printed in Western Germany in 1985. It says: The Giengen Teddy bear 1906 MARGARETE STEIFF GIENGEN-BRENZ. In 1902, in the little village of Giengen an der Brenz in Germany, Richard Steiff, the nephew of Margarete Steiff designed and created the world's first jointed bear. His original prototype incorporated another "first" ... a stuffed animal covered in mohair plush. Although Richard used gray mohair scraps for his initial model, this color was not used commercially. By 1906, only 4 years later, almost one million Teddy Bears had been produced. The majority of these bears were shipped to America. This Teddy Bear commeoorates the skill of the Giengen craftsmen and the success of a new idea.
