Sports cars probably got their name because only big sports could afford them. Then the Triumph Spitfire came along.
The Spitfire is a real sports car with a long track record to prove it. But it just doesn’t cost like sports cars are supposed to.
That goes for the new ’69 Spitfire Mk3. It still comes with an engine that can take you to 60 in 13 seconds.
It still has four forward speeds, three of them synchromeshed.
It still has rack-and-pinion steer
ing and four wheel independent suspension.

Triumph takes 3 out of 5  in the champion’s championships.
At Riverside, the 1968 SCCA race winners from each national division met in the American Road Race of Champions to decide the super champions. A TR-4A won D Production. A Spitfire Mk3 won F Production.
And a Spitfire Mk2 won G Production.
In C Production, a TR-250 placed third behind two factory Porsches. (But in front of three others.) And in E Production the lone GT6 cracked up gaining on the leaders with half the race gone. Which just goes to prove that not all our champions can be super champions.
Only most of them.
